How the city comparisons are built

This calculator is a planning tool built from a fixed city dataset. It does not fetch a live local quote or claim that one index captures every household’s spending pattern.

Primary data sources

Calculation and limits

Comparison pages calculate relative differences from the stored values for the two selected cities. Results are broad city-level context, not neighborhood-level prices, an inflation forecast, a mortgage offer, tax advice, or a personalized household budget.

ACS estimates include sampling error and describe a multi-year period. Housing, mortgage, tax, insurance, and utility costs can change after the source period, so verify important decisions with current local quotes and the latest government releases.
